Soul Eater

A skeletal-beast undead of difficulty 100–150 that emits a repeatable instant-death aura, growing stronger and healing after devouring souls.
- Appearance: a bone beast (bone horse) wrapped in mist instead of flesh, with pus-yellow and bright-green lights flickering in the mist.
- Abilities: area instant-death/fear aura; temporarily strengthened after killing a target instantly (soul eating), and can eat souls to restore health.
- Legend says a city of over 100,000 in a beastman nation of the central continent lost 95% of its population to three Soul Eaters and was abandoned as the "Silent City".
- The Slane Theocracy believes one can destroy a city or small nation, requiring at least a 3rd-tier caster to counter.
- Ainz makes them with "Create Middle Undead" and they can be ridden; in the Sorcerer Kingdom they pull carts instead of donkeys, and in Vol. 9 all 500 of the Sorcerer Kingdom's troops (about 200 spiked-armor warriors and about 300 leather-armored soldiers) rode them into battle.
- In YGGDRASIL a level-appropriate player would be instantly killed only once in several hundred tries, so the ability was nearly meaningless.
- The work mixes "Create" and "Make" for middle undead creation; the light novels should consistently use "Create"; sources consider it one of the weaker Create Middle Undead options
- The fear aura and instant-death aura are both its abilities (10-233); riding at 11-319
- In the Holy Kingdom arc, to compare "making undead from corpses" with "only harvesting souls", Ainz had Soul Eaters wipe out demi-humans with "soul eating" as an experiment (13-148)
- Boris, a former Kingdom adamantite-rank adventurer and captain of Marquis Raeven's guard, told the Marquis the legend of the "Silent City"; Gustav, seeing Soul Eaters pulling carts in the Sorcerer Kingdom, declared they were not undead that could be controlled
Notes
It was slated to appear in anime season 3 but was cut, finally appearing in season 4; the Web novel has no Soul Eaters.
