Assassination Attempt on Gazef Stronoff
Vol. 1, Year 1 after the transfer (June–July), evening of day 4: the Slane Theocracy lured Warrior-Captain Gazef out by having troops disguised as Imperial soldiers massacre villages, intending for the Sunlight Scripture to surround and kill him outside Carne Village; the plan failed because Ainz intervened.
- The Theocracy had already decided to abandon the corrupt Kingdom and let the Baharuth Empire absorb it; "killing Gazef Stronoff" was the plan underway as the story begins, with troops disguised as Imperial knights raiding villages around E-Rantel and the Sunlight Scripture handling the hunt
- On the morning of day 4 the disguised soldiers attacked Carne Village but were crushed by the Death Knight Ainz summoned, and about half the villagers survived; that evening Gazef arrived with his warrior troop, and the Sunlight Scripture promptly surrounded the village
- Knowing it was a trap, Gazef sortied to draw the enemy; before leaving he asked Ainz for help and to protect the villagers, and Ainz accepted, giving him a "strange carving"
- Sunlight Scripture captain Nigun used his innate talent "Strengthen Summoned Monsters" to fight with angels and nearly completed the kill; on the brink of death Gazef was saved when the carving's power swapped him with Ainz, who then personally defeated the Sunlight Scripture
- The warrior troop was not wiped out and was able to recuperate afterward (recuperating in E-Rantel, unverified); after returning to the capital Gazef reported the Carne Village incident to the king and nobles
- At the time the Black Scripture was on standby with Kaire, equipped with a World Item, guarding against the "Catastrophe Dragon Lord"'s revival, and took no part in this mission (it was ordered out only after the Earth Priestess Princess died); the claim that Gazef was made to leave the Kingdom's five treasures in the capital and set out lightly equipped (unverified)
Notes
Japanese sources' assessment: Gazef "knew it was a trap set for him, yet leapt into danger for the people's sake". In the Web novel Nigun had no order to kill Gazef and so never encountered Ainz.
