Vol. 14 interlude (background setting): "Connelier", the most popular event—a melee on a mock battlefield—at the tournament the Karnassus City-State Alliance holds every 5 years; 40 years ago a riot broke out at the Okness tournament.

• The City-State Alliance consists of 12 small states (cities); to resolve past grudges, it holds a tournament every 5 years hosted in rotation, with 16 events in total
• "Connelier" has 10 champions chosen by each city fight in a melee within an arena protected by the magic item "Battle Banner of Peace"; it is the most spectacular and popular event, and many watch only this one
• Because it draws the most attention, even the slightest mistake in running Connelier is unforgivable
• At the Okness tournament 40 years ago, undead whose presence had been suspected appeared mid-match, sparking a riot with many casualties; "Okness's management" has since been a byword for "incompetence"
• City leaders privately think Okness's management was not that bad apart from this one mistake
• Over 50 years ago Bebard hosted the tournament (the mayor then being Re-Bern Cabelia, unverified); as of Vol. 14, the current mayor Re-Kista Cabelia is fretting over the tournament Bebard will host in 4 years

Japanese sources speculate that "Connelier" may come from combat + melee, and "Okness" from acknowledged + nasty, implying "officially recognized bad management".
