Royal Coup

ザナックによるランポッサⅢ世の監禁 · World & History · Battles & Events

Vol. 14, sometime in Years 3–5 after the transfer, during the Sorcerer Kingdom's invasion: learning that the Sorcerer Kingdom had already seized much of the country, Second Prince Zanac judged negotiation hopeless, confined his father King Ramposa III, and took over the government.

After the Katze Plains massacre, Ramposa III, grief-stricken at losing Gazef, lost his composure, while Zanac began displaying abilities he had long hidden.
After Philip seized the Sorcerer Kingdom's food convoy, Albedo came as envoy; Ramposa offered his own head as an apology and was refused; the Sorcerer Kingdom declared war, with hostilities set for noon a month later.
The Sorcerer Kingdom used Marquis Raeven to block information, so news of the invasion reached the capital about a month late; Ramposa thought the declaration was a mere threat and prepared to negotiate, planning to send Zanac and Renner as envoys to the City-State Alliance for safety.
When word of the Sorcerer Kingdom's attack arrived from the port city of E-Naeurl, Zanac judged there was no room left for negotiation, confined Ramposa III, and took over the government with the Minister of Internal Affairs.
Zanac then sortied with an army of about 400,000 and was killed by rebel nobles before the lines; after the Kingdom's army was destroyed, Ramposa was released and began preparing to hand the crown and scepter to the Sorcerer King.
Other sources state: the coup was publicly covered as "the King's illness" and many courtiers did not know; Renner saw through it and used it to keep her brother in check; though confined, Ramposa could still dine with his children (unverified).

Notes

Japanese sources record Ramposa's reign as 39 years and his age at his first appearance as 60; in the author's "how capable are the kings" ranking he is 7th (no failures, but no great successes either).
