Runecraft

An old technique by which dwarven rune smiths enchant items by carving runes; it caught Ainz's eye and is being secretly revived after moving to the Sorcerer Kingdom.
- There are 90 runes: 50 lower, 25 middle, 10 upper, 5 highest; legend speaks of hidden runes and divine runes as well (Vol. 11)
- Carving one rune is enough to enchant; materials cost almost nothing, but it takes three times as long as magical enchantment; even skilled smiths can carve at most 4–6 runes
- 200 years ago, after the demon gods attacked the royal capital, the Rune King left with the six-rune "Hammer That Shakes the Earth"; magical enchantment spread and runes gradually fell out of use
- Gondo, the only one who never gave up, met Ainz, and all the rune smiths were recruited to the Sorcerer Kingdom, developing in secret in Carne Village
- Trying to magically enchant an item already rune-enchanted gets repelled, and forcing it distorts the runes
- The bow Ainz lent Neia, "Ultimate Shooting Star Super", among others, is promoted under the banner of "rune technology"
- Known runes: the middle rune "Lagu (ᛚ)"; the lower rune "Kaun (sharpness)" raises a weapon's sharpness and makes deep wounds easier (11-146–147)
- A sword made 150 years ago by the Dwarf Kingdom's Stone Nail Workshop, with a rune on its hilt that charges the blade with lightning, was collected by Osk and became Ainz's reason for going to the Dwarf Kingdom (10-361–363)
- According to the Empire, aptitude for rune smithing is rarer than aptitude for magic casting (11-149); Gondo holds the weaponsmith, armorsmith, itemsmith, and runesmith classes
Notes
In the light novels' YGGDRASIL runes are merely decorative, while the Web novel has a runesmith class, whose skills are also used in Nazarick's defense systems.
