Attack on the Sorcerer Kingdom's Transport
Vol. 14, sometime in Years 3–5 after the transfer (estimated): Baron Philip of the Kingdom's new faction attacked the Sorcerer Kingdom's food convoy aiding the Holy Kingdom, giving the Sorcerer Kingdom its pretext to declare war on and destroy the Kingdom.
- Philip was originally the third son of the Montserrat baronial house; his eldest brother died in the Katze Plains massacre (his second brother died of illness), so he became head of the house and, backed by Hilma, leader of the new faction
- After taking over his domain he governed poorly, and its food production fell; from fellow faction members Baron Delvi and Baron Rokirlen he learned that the Sorcerer Kingdom was stockpiling food in the capital and sending food aid to the Holy Kingdom along the highway
- Philip reasoned that if the Sorcerer Kingdom's food in the capital vanished, crop prices would rise and he would become a hero for striking the Sorcerer Kingdom, so he proposed and carried out the attack
- He appeared majestically in the convoy's path; the convoy fell into confusion and fled without a fight, and the attack "succeeded"
- The Sorcerer Kingdom then used this as grounds to declare war on the Kingdom, which was reduced to rubble; Philip and the two barons, along with their people, were "dealt with" by Albedo (Vol. 15 hints he is still alive in the Frozen Prison)
- Albedo had originally planned, with the Eight Fingers' cooperation, to incite the Kingdom's people to revolt through famine and use the revolt as a pretext for war (Ainz called it the "carrot-and-stick operation"), but Philip's premature move upset the plan (unverified)
- Philip took 50 of his people to Baron Delvi's domain to join the two barons' troops (the claim of about 200 conscripts in all is unverified)
Notes
While many great minds were thrown into confusion, Ainz alone guessed the truth of Philip's outrage with an "ordinary person's way of thinking". Among readers, "Philip" has become shorthand for "an idiot who thinks he's clever".
