Basics 13

  1. YGGDRASIL

A DMMO-RPG released by a Japanese company in 2126 and shut down in 2138; in Japan it was practically synonymous with the DMMO-RPG genre, and it is where Ainz and Nazarick come from.

  2. DMMO-RPG / Real World

A DMMO-RPG is an immersive game in which one dives into a virtual world through the brain's nanocomputer network, the "neuron nano interface"; in Suzuki Satoru's 2138 the Earth's environment has collapsed and megacorporations rule in all but name.

  3. Guild / Transfer

A YGGDRASIL guild is a player organization of up to 100 members; at the moment of shutdown, Momonga was transported to another world together with the guild base, the Great Tomb of Nazarick, and the NPCs gained wills of their own.

  4. New World

The world of sword and sorcery to which Nazarick was transported. It has no official name in the original work; readers commonly call it "the local world," "the other world," or "the New World." Its inhabitants, remarkably, use the same races, magic, and classes as YGGDRASIL.

  5. Humans in the New World

The New World's "Homo sapiens" went extinct long ago in the struggle for survival; what are now called humans are an inferior race driven onto the plains, nothing but food or slaves to the demi-humans.

  6. Hundred-Year Backlash

YGGDRASIL players descend on the New World about once every 100 years and leave legends and myths through overwhelming power; locals call this the "backlash" (揺り返し).

  7. Nine Worlds

YGGDRASIL's map consists of nine worlds formed from the nine leaves remaining on the World Tree, each two or three times the size of Tokyo; three of them favor Heteromorphic races.

  8. Player Killing

    PK/PKK

YGGDRASIL allowed free PvP in the field and in dungeons. Heteromorphic players were frequent PK targets, so Touch Me formed "Nine's Own Goal," a clan dedicated to PKK, which became the forerunner of Ainz Ooal Gown.

  9. World Classes

In YGGDRASIL, classes with "World" in their names are especially powerful by design: World Champion is the strongest warrior class, World Disaster is the annihilation magic class with the highest firepower, and World Guardian is called a balance breaker.

  10. World Enemy

Balance-breaking monsters in YGGDRASIL that even a "Legion" of six parties (36 players) struggles to defeat; there are 32 in total.

  11. Death Penalty and Resurrection

In YGGDRASIL, death costs 5 levels and drops equipment; in the New World after the transfer, resurrection likewise involves a "loss of life force," and NPCs revived with guild funds lose several days of memory.

  12. Guild Base System

YGGDRASIL guild bases constantly drain gold. Bases of castle class and above spawn POP monsters automatically and let guilds create their own NPCs; the "Ariadne" check system forbids sealing off entrances, and a guild collapses if its guild weapon is destroyed.

  13. Notable YGGDRASIL Guilds

At its peak YGGDRASIL had thousands of guilds, and about 800 remained at shutdown; besides Ainz Ooal Gown, the original work and the Web novel mention several notable guilds.
