Tier Magic

Magic defined by YGGDRASIL's game system, divided into the 1st through 10th tiers with super-tier magic above; it is said to have been brought into the New World by the Eight Greed Kings 500 years ago.
- YGGDRASIL has over 6,000 tier and super-tier spells combined, but a level-100 player can learn only 300 (magic classes learn 3 per level)
- Level-100 players' hunting grounds involve spells of the 8th tier and above
- "Spellcasting level" is calculated separately for the four schools — arcane, divine, spiritual and other — determining which tier one can reach
- In the Web novel spells consume MP corresponding to their tier, while in the light novel at least 10th-tier spells vary in cost
- In the New World skilled magic casters reach at most the 3rd tier, most heroes stop at the 5th, ordinary humans cannot cast the 7th without a grand ritual, and most people believe the 8th tier and above do not exist
- After the transfer, some spells, including super-tier magic, became stronger in effect and mana cost than in the game, and friendly fire also takes effect
- Locals have also developed original spells not in YGGDRASIL, and the "0th tier"
- YGGDRASIL monsters can generally use about 8 spells, but high-level monsters like dragons, demons and angels far exceed that
- Ainz has learned 718 spells: 300 from level 100, 100 added via cash items, and 318 added through repeated PK and special ritual events (Web novel "Part 1: Magic"); the skill 〈Dark Wisdom〉 can increase the number of learned spells using player corpses dropped through PK (BD bonus Prologue (Part 2)-051)
- There are so many spells that 300 is nowhere near enough: even teleportation splits into long-range with error, long-range without error, effect-only, short-range infinite chain jumps and so on; some spells require prerequisite classes, events, items or prerequisite spells, and prerequisite spells alone sometimes take up a third of the total (Web novel)
- Ordinary attack spells cannot be mitigated by evasion, defense or physical armor; structures like gates are strong against lightning, but spells like 〈Lightning〉 pass straight through
Notes
Much of the magic in this work is drawn from the TRPG Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 (e.g. 〈Lion's Heart〉 corresponds to Lion's Heart).
