Undead

The umbrella term for walking corpses and incorporeal spirits driven by negative energy; they hate the living and have many immunities, but generally fear holy power and fire.
- Basic traits: immune to critical hits, mental effects, poison, disease, sleep, paralysis, instant death, ability damage, and energy drain; need no food or oxygen and never tire; have darkvision and complete cold resistance, and are healed by negative energy.
- With few exceptions, their weaknesses are fire and holy; no amount of damage slows their movements.
- In the New World they spawn naturally where death hangs heavy, such as graveyards and old battlefields; left alone they breed stronger individuals, so regular purges are needed; the Katze Plains are a hotspot.
- The "Spiral of Death" ritual that cults use to exploit this cycle is actually just a failed magic ritual born of misunderstanding.
- Some undead have the ability to "create their own kind"; "requiem rites" are performed to keep corpses from rising.
- Any race except slimes (which have no skeletons) can become zombies or skeletons.
- Ainz sees undead, which need no food and never tire, as limitless labor and uses them on a large scale in the Sorcerer Kingdom.
- Abandoned corpses very rarely rise as undead on their own, but the Katze Plains are the exception; a corpse that rises is said to become undead matching its strength in life (from The Ghost Ship of the Katze Plains)
- When adventurers loot corpses they always leave the dead one accessory before burial, because taking every item is said to risk spawning undead obsessed with those items (The Ghost Ship of the Katze Plains (Part 1)-073)
- Skeletons are fully resistant to piercing and resistant to slashing but weak to bludgeoning; zombies run on negative energy so they neither rot nor breed maggots, only starting to decay once destroyed (side story)
- A wraith appears to an observer as the observer's own race; undead looking at it see their original race (2-307)
Notes
Vampires are an exception among undead, for example retaining sexual desire; Ainz has heard this comes from imitating the vampire princesses of legend.
