Death Penalty and Resurrection
In YGGDRASIL, death costs 5 levels and drops equipment; in the post-transfer New World, resurrection likewise involves "loss of life force", and NPCs revived with guild funds lose several days of memory.
- Game: death costs 5 levels and randomly drops 1 piece of equipment (high-difficulty dungeons may drop 2, favoring valuable ones); characters at level 5 or below would be "annihilated" per the setting, but a special blessing stops them at level 1 (Vol. 1)
- Resurrection magic eases the level loss at the cost of gold coins, gems, etc.; resurrection wands only consume charges; cash items can reduce it to a small loss of experience
- Four respawn options: on the spot, the dungeon entrance, a nearby town's temple, or the guild base; if the respawn point is camped, one gets spawn-killed
- Players used death penalties as a way to rebuild characters; level loss strips the most recently gained race/class first, and that level's skills are lost too
- NPCs: the guild can revive them without penalty by paying gold according to level; level 100 costs 500 million YGGDRASIL gold coins (Vol. 3)
- New World: locals also lose life force when revived, and adventurers of iron rank or below almost always turn to ash with [Raise Dead]; the dead can refuse resurrection; resurrection acts on the soul; those who died of old age probably cannot be revived; some Wild Magic can revive without penalty
- After the transfer, NPC resurrection causes memory loss: Shalltear, revived with guild funds in Vol. 3, lost about 5 days of memory, and the author's Twitter gives her age as "500 years minus a few days"
