Leveling in the New World
Locals have no concept of "levels"; they only know that the body can suddenly grow stronger under extreme conditions, and each person's talent sets the upper limit of growth.
- Locals understand leveling up as a rapid rise in physical, mental and magical faculties when the body is in an extreme state, which happens more readily when fighting strong enemies
- Evileye, half-doubting, calls the fact that "battles in small elite groups are the best way to get strong quickly" "an efficient leveling ritual"
- There is physical and class "talent"; it's not simply a matter of accumulating experience as players do, and becoming a magic caster also requires a "connection to the world"
- Each person's level cap differs: for example, the dwarf Gondo topped out at level 11
- Locals can learn both YGGDRASIL's special techniques (skills) and the New World's own "martial arts"
- YGGDRASIL has over 2,000 classes (base plus advanced); each class and race caps at 15, 10 or 5 levels, so reaching 100 requires stacking several; one could also take 100 level-1 classes to reach 100, but it would be weak
- Locals seem to need experience related to a class to advance in it: e.g. Hamsuke, who received warrior training, and Arche, who has the "Wizard (Academy)" class from the magic academy; some gain classes against their will, such as Tsuare's "Slave" and Neia's "Evangelist"
- Fluder says that in the New World choosing which magic to learn is nearly the same as choosing one's life, so few learn low-priority detection and information spells (10-341); a note in Japanese sources: locals cannot die and level down to start over as in the game
